SECTOR: Education – CONTRACT VALUE: £850,000.00 – DATE COMPLETED: February 2014
AWARDS: LABC Building Excellence Awards 2015 : Best Education Project Finalist
Shortlisted for an RIBA Regional Award 2016
Six new classrooms and ancillary facilities were completed in February 2014. These were designed as a pair of pavilions with intricate folding roofs culminating in glazed lanterns at their apex, naturally lighting and ventilating the interiors within.
Externally the pavilions are clad in western red cedar, providing cohesion across the site with the timber clad hydrotherapy pool and entrance building that was completed in 2006. Roofs are standing seam mill finished aluminium.
The classrooms are connected to the existing school via a wide glazed corridor link. Thermal mass is provided by concrete slab floors and blockwork walls. Insulation wraps around the building as an unbroken layer, from the underside of the slab, to the outside of blockwork walls and into the roof, eliminating cold bridging.
The project was a finalist for Best Education Building at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2015 and was shortlisted for an RIBA Award in 2016.
