Purple House Women's Centre

The scheme provides affordable housing for single women as an extension to the important services of Winner. The project is comprised of 10 flats within 4 individual housing blocks, arranged around a central walled courtyard. Due to the sensitive nature of the proposal, the housing maintained a sufficient level of security to protect the potentially vulnerable tenants. However, safety requirements of this scheme did not replace the need for a warm and friendly place to live.

The dwellings face predominantly into the private courtyard, which is well planted and incorporates ‘hit and miss’ brickwork around the periphery. An open walkway connects the individual blocks and forms private balcony space for the women, again facing into the secure courtyard. The courtyard elevations are an entirely green through colour render, giving the scheme it’s signature colours and to ensure it felt less fortified. Facing red brick is used on the public facing elevations to tie it into its context. Projecting aluminium window reveals give these elevations interest, and are coloured in green for consistency.
