‘Centre4’ occupies the former St Mary’s Roman Catholic Secondary School and  is located on the Nunsthorpe Estate in Grimsby.  St Mary’s closed in July 2010 and remained empty until works started on site in October 2013.
We were appointed at the concept stage of the project and were involved in helping to formulate the Client’s brief. The brief informed the design strategy to retain and refurbish the existing building and create a multi-use building with diverse range of tenants and users. This will be achieved by adding small scale extensions which will provide a welcoming entrance and improve the internal circulation.

A new canopy is proposed to extend from the building to form a recognisable entrance and gathering area. The enclosed court at the centre of the building will be used as a space for groups to tend to plants and the external area adjacent to the sports hall will be used as an allotment. The oak cladding to the underside of the canopy extends internally above the foyer space and into the main circulation spine. The reception, cafe and main hall are all accessed from the foyer and are joined by glazed screens and sliding partitions.

The project was a finalist for Best Community Project at the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2015.
